Windows Internals, 4th edition (click here to order from Amazon) is the official Microsoft Press book on the internals of the Windows kernel, written with full access to the source code and development team.

The 4th edition covers Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 (32-bit and 64-bit) and has 25% more content than the previous edition, including updated and expanded labs (including better coverage of Sysinternals tools) and a brand new chapter on crash dump analysis.

NOTE: The fifth edition will cover Vista and Windows Server 2008 and is planned to be available in January 2009.

The 4th edition is also bundled with the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit, (click here to order from Amazon) which as a bonus comes with a full electronic version of the book (the e-book is not included in the standalone book).

"While obviously system level developers will gain the most benefit from this book, there is a ton of information for IT professionals as well - particularly for system performance tuning."

"This is one of the few books where the informational sidebars are truly informational."
