Windows Internals is the official Microsoft Press book series on the internals of the Windows kernel, written with full access to the source code and development team. The latest version is the fifth edition which covers Vista and Windows Server 2008 (click here to order). It is also available from O'Reilly in 3 ebook formats, from the iTunes store for an iPhone or iPod Touch, or you can read it online through Safari.

he 6th edition is under way (available first half of 2012) and will cover Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.  Note that 99% of the 5th edition applies to these new versions.  In the mean time, for a summary of changes, you can view one of several Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 internals webcasts by Mark Russinovich.

The 4th edition (click here to order from Amazon) covers Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. It is also bundled with the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit, (click here to order from Amazon) which as a bonus comes with a full electronic version of the book (the e-book is not included in the standalone book). It is also available from the iTunes store and can be read online via Safari.
